Int. Women's Day reading by author Merle Massie at Sask. Government House
Events
To celebrate International Women's Day, author and USask undergraduate research coordinator Dr. Merle Massie (PhD) will be reading from her book, "A Radiant Life: The Honourable Sylvia Fedoruk Scientist, Sports Icon, and Stateswoman" at the Saskatchewan Government House.
Merle Massie is a Saskatchewan author, historian and farmer in west-central Saskatchewan, and works for the
University of Saskatchewan in the Office of the Vice President Research as the coordinator of undergraduate
research initiatives. A Radiant Life: The Honourable Sylvia Fedoruk Scientist, Sports Icon and Statewoman is
Massie’s fourth published book and it won the Saskatchewan Book Award for non-fiction in 2021. For fun,
Massie can be found doing any of the following with enthusiasm, but no particular skill: gardening, kayaking,
camping, biking, reading, baking, or watching the clouds.
Sylvia Fedoruk was the Chief Medical Physicist with the Saskatoon Cancer Clinic, and was involved in the
development of the world’s first Cobalt 60 unit and one of the first nuclear medicine scanning machines. She
was also a gifted athlete, who was inducted into the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame.
Dr. Fedoruk was the province’s first female Lieutenant Governor and embraced her duties as Her Majesty’s
representative from 1988 to 1994. She forged a particular connection with the people of the north, where she
was the first Lieutenant Governor to present Awards of Excellence to northern students.
